The Dog Stars (2012) by Peter Heller
Heller's novel follows Hig, one of the few survivors of a flu pandemic, who lives with his dog and another survivor. When a random radio transmission gets picked up by his old Cessna, Hig takes off for the source, not knowing what he might find in the abandoned world beyond the perimeter.
