Biography
Sally Ride: America's First Woman in Space by Lynn Sherr (Thorndike Press, July)
Oh man, I can't WAIT to get my paws on this book. I mean, if it weren't for the whole math and science and being crazy-fit thing, I'd totally be an astronaut. But seriously, I read James Hansen's First Man- a biography of Neil Armstrong- a few years ago and became only more fascinated with the development of the space program and the men and women who made it happen. I don't know a whole lot about Sally Ride, but I'm going to change that.
Literary Fiction
Last Night at the Blue Angel by Rebecca Rotert (William Morrow, 336 pages, July 1)
Early-1960s Chicago. A successful jazz singer pursues stardom while her young daughter tries to keep up, constantly haunted by a sense of impending disaster. And a literary debut nonetheless! Sounds tantalizing.
Mystery
The String Diaries by Stephen Lloyd Jones (Mulholland Books, 432 pages, July 1)
Wow. In his debut novel, Lloyd Jones offers us a centuries-old shapeshifter who inserts himself into families in order to destroy them. Generations of women from one family (from the 19th century down to the present day) have kept diaries that note how one can survive this monster. Again: WOW.
