Flappers: Six Women of a Dangerous Generation by Judith Mackrell (Sarah Crichton Books, 512 pages, January 14)They were daring, they were stylish, and they had really cool hair. Mackrell dives into the flapper myth in this biographical exploration of six iconic flapper ladies struttin' their stuff pre-WWI through the crash of 1929. Looks like fun.

The Exiles Return by Elisabeth de Waal (Picador, 336 pages, January 7)Published after half a century, The Exiles Return follows five people as they return to war-torn and devastated Vienna at the end of WWII. De Waal's been compared to writers like Irene Nemirovsky and W. G. Sebald- good company. And this latest WWII novel sounds like it will fit right in with the outpouring of similar literary fiction and non-fiction about the period.
Mystery
The Avalon Chanter by Lillian Stewart Carl (Five Star, 332 pages, January 22)An archaeologist trying to prove that Farnaby Island is the Avalon of Arthurian legend, a tomb filled with surprises, and an ex-cop come together in this lovely little historical mystery set in Northumbria.
